THE FOG-HOG

There’s a lot of danger in living along a lake up in the great North Woods. The old guides often tell about Star Lake, in upper Wisconsin, and the trouble the people there have with the fog-hogs.
The fog-hogs come out only in the very densest fogs. They are greedy animals that feed entirely on fish, and my, how the poor little fish are afraid of them!
There are such dense fogs up there, the oldtimers say, that the fish can’t tell where the water ends and the fog starts, so they are likely to swim right out into the fog, and that is where the fog-hog gets them. The folks living near the lake declare that on foggy nights they have to keep their doors and windows tightly shut, for the fish will swim right inside in their efforts to get away from the terrible fog-hog. x
